Peanut Butter Jelly Time is a song Internet phenomenon and meme that emerged in the early 2000s. Based upon a song recorded by the Buckwheat Boys, the best known version of the animation (usually distributed as a Flash clip) shows an animated Dancing Banana (itself a well-known emoticon) moving back and forth to the song's repetitive chorus. In some versions of the animation, the song's lyrics are displayed on screen. The original version was made by Ryan Gancenia Etrata and Kevin Flynn from a thread on OffTopic.com.
Many versions of this Macromedia Flash clip were made, and some of the alternate versions were put on popular Flash websites such as Newgrounds.
The banana also serves as the favicon to the humor site EBaum's World.
Cultural references
Hot Topic sold a black T-shirt with a picture of the dancing banana next to the words "It's Peanut Butter Jelly Time!", which is a line from the song. Peanut Butter Jelly Time has also been referenced in television series, in Family Guy (Brian, dressed in a banana costume dances to the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song to cheer up Peter) and in an episode of Ed (Main character Ed watches the Flash animation on his computer).
In World of Warcraft, the Tauren Male does the exact same dance.
Juggler Jason Garfield has done a live-action juggling video featuring the song.
