Paint by number (or painting by numbers) is a popular coloring book-style hobby.
Artists are given an empty piece of detailed line art in which every shape, shadow, highlight, and toned area of the picture is drawn distinctly, with a number placed inside. It thus becomes the artist's job to match each number with the intended color (usually indicated on an instructions sheet). When completed, the coloring-in process will create a detailed, attractive painting. The idea is to allow youngsters and adults alike, who may not be artistically talented on their own, to participate in painting as a leisure activity.
Paint by number was invented by Palmer's Paint Company. It was a very popular American hobby in the 1950s, and the kits and paintings are being recognized as collector's items (and even art) today. A version is still enjoyed by children.
In informal usage, the term "paint by numbers" can be used as an adjective meaning unoriginal, cliched, or trite.
In children's activity books, simpler activities are often presented to children and are called color by numbers.
