He was born and grew up in Briarcliff near Bronxville, New York. In 1961, he received his BFA at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, and received his MFA at the Yale University School of Art and Architecture in 1963. In his work from the 1960s and 1970s, he used simplified means, typically monochrome canvases either alone or in series or triptychs, to achieve what he considered to be highly emotional and subjective representations; more recently he has begun painting works consisting of swirling and entangling lines in two or more colors, as in the "Cold Mountain" series. He is considered to be one of the more important American painters of the late 20th and early 21st century, and has been the subject of several shows and retrospectives, beginning with his 1975 retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

From October 29, 2006 to January 15, 2007, the Museum of Modern Art in New York will show "Brice Marden: A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings." According to the Modern, "this retrospective of the artist Brice Marden is an unprecedented gathering of his work, with more than fifty paintings and an equal number of drawings, organized chronologically, drawn from all phases of the artist's career."

Marden was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University in 2000.

His daughter, Mirabelle Marden, is a proprietor of Rivington Arms, an art gallery in New York.
