Crape-myrtle (Lagerstroemia; also Crepe myrtle) is a genus of about 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees or large shrubs native to eastern Asia and Australia. They have sinewy-looking fluted stems whose bark peels off; each year the parts peel off between those that peeled off last year, or where squirrels scratch it, giving a patchy appearance. The leaves are opposite, simple, with entire margins, and vary from 5-20 cm long. The flowers have six or seven crinkly-edged petals on stalks, sticking out between the sepals, which are simple triangular points. The flowers occur in long (20-40 cm) spike-like clusters, and can be white, pink red, purple or lavender; flowering is from mid to late summer. The fruit is a capsule, green at first, then ripening to black, which opens along six or seven lines, producing teeth much like those of the calyx, and releasing numerous small winged seeds.

Lagerstroemia species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Endoclita malabaricus.

The Common Crape-myrtle Lagerstroemia indica, from China and Korea, was introduced to the United States by French botanist Andre Michaux ca. 1790 in Charleston, South Carolina, where it is today a very common ornamental shrub raised and cultivated in South Central United States, and is growing in popularity.

The Giant Crape-myrtle Lagerstroemia speciosa, from tropical India, is a tree which is established only in the warmest parts of the US, such as Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Georgia, and surrounding states.

Both species are becoming more prevalent in the home owners landscape designs as well as commercial industries for businesses and municipalities along roadways, highways and byways. They both have become so common it is sometimes almost impossible to tell them apart without laboratory testing.

The genus is named after the Swedish merchant Magnus von Lagerström, who supplied Carolus Linnaeus with plants he collected.

Persian lime will recover

Sun-Sentinel - 2 hours, 30 minutes ago
Q. My Persian lime was 15-by-15 feet when Wilma blew it over. I pruned some of the roots and 1/3 to 1/2 of the top. The tree was replanted and now has lots of leaves. Although it produced some flower buds, they fell off. I fertilized it twice and it has a slight fungus problem. Will it produce more flowers and fruit soon? -- Pete Poplawski, Boca Raton

The ancient world loved the pomegranate. Eating one is a messy but wonderful ritual (as Adam and Eve fatefully may have learned). Now, bursting with color, they are generating an all-new buzz.

GARDENING Q&A: Getting peony to bloom is at root a deep subject
Richmond Times-Dispatch - Oct 05 6:58 AM
Q. In 2005, I planted two peonies, not the plants, just the roots. They came up just fine but did not bloom. They came up this spring and grew nicely, but they are fairly small and have no blooms. Someone told me it takes a couple of years to get blooms when you plant them from roots. Is this true?

Prune hydrangea to control its size
The Star-Ledger - Oct 05 1:41 AM
I understand that the peegee hydrangea can be kept small like a shrub, but the fully grown kinds I have seen are either big shrubs or small trees. I was given a small plant several years ago and would like to know how to keep it from getting too big. -- J.R.,

Wise gardeners will have lots of color
Tallahassee Democrat - Oct 04 11:05 PM
If you think spring is the best time for gardening, think again. Generally speaking, fall is a much better time to plant shrubs, trees, perennials and bulbs. Roots become established during our cool winter season.
