Usage in entertainment

The term is known as a popular culture reference in most uses. The concept has made its way from television comedies to books and newspapers.

• Marlon Brando and Donald Cammell's book Fan Tan contains, as New York Times book reviewer Joe Queenan describes, "a few ribald scenes—one where the heroine has defecated on the hero's chest," which is what is typically described as a steamer.^[3]

• In Nicholas Johnson and Eirik Sønneland's book Big Dead Place: Inside the Strange and Menacing World of Antarctica, about the United States Antarctic Program, they make mention of the Cleveland steamer in the context of types of food.^[4]

• The late Notorious B.I.G. referenced a woman wanting him to perform the act on her (in much more graphic terms) in a phone call prior to the song "Nasty Boy" on his second album Life After Death.

• The band Tenacious D mentions the act in the song "Rock Your Socks".^[5] They have also sold mock baseball jerseys at concerts for the fictitious "Cleveland Steamers" baseball team, sporting the player number 666.

• In the Family Guy episode "Mr. Saturday Knight", Peter Griffin becomes a prostitute. While he is standing on a street corner, his wife Lois drives by and stops at a traffic light. He propositions her, then asks her if she'd like a Cleveland steamer.^[6]

• The Bob & Tom Show have a song called "The Cleveland Steamer" on their album Donkey Show. It references many different slang terms for sexual acts.

• Although not referred to by name, the act of a Cleveland steamer is mentioned several times in the film Not Another Teen Movie.

• Wrestler John Cena claims to have performed the act on his August 11, 2006 edition of 5 Questions.^[7]

• In a season 1 episode of Cheap Seats, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Jerry Minor appear as guests in a skit about Putt-Putt golf. Minor plays the owner of "Steamer's Family Fun Center" and Kenney-Silver carries a protest sign that reads "Go back to Cleveland, Steamer!!!"^[8]
